Registered Massage Therapy

Everyone loves a massage, right? There is the physical relief in having those knots of tension treated until they release that persistent ache you’ve been feeling. Actually, our registered massage therapy helps Port Coquitlam and Port Moody patients achieve better health, as well as just feeling good. By loosening muscle tension, our registered massage therapists (RMTs) can help your joints work more fluidly, decrease compression on nerves, and improve your range of motion.

A massage therapy appointment at Momentum Therapeutics is soothing and comfortable. A registered massage therapist will manipulate soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, and other any other area, such as the joints, that are painful or uncomfortable to you. In this manner, your RMT will alleviate problems caused by muscle overuse, occupational stresses, and such. These treatments are now widely considered a beneficial complement to conventional medical treatments.

Do you need more reasons to book an appointment for massage therapy? Our patients have also found that after visiting an RMT:

  • Stress levels are lower. Long-term stress can do damage to your body, so relieving stress is a formidable step toward staying healthy.

  • Sleep is improved. If you suffer from insomnia, lower back pain, or fibromyalgia, regular massages can help you sleep.

  • Anxiety and depression are relieved. We can all use less anxiety in our daily lives, right?

  • Pain is relieved. Especially when pain comes from illness or surgery, your body needs to heal. Massage therapy accelerates healing and helps you manage pain. Patients have found relief from the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, back pain, and more.

Physiotherapy

Our physiotherapist at Momentum Therapeutics, Sanjin Sadovich, has extensive experience treating sports injuries and orthopedic patients. He is a member of the sports and orthopedic divisions of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and continues to take courses in manual therapy, sports injuries, and movement systems. Sanjin has completed his Doctorate in Physiotherapy. Coquitlam and Port Moody patients depend on him for relief!

Sanjin has experience with the following clinics and hospitals: BC Children’s Hospital Ortho In-Patient Unit, Surrey Memorial Hospital Ortho-In Patient Unit, Island Hand Therapy Private Practice (Victoria, BC), Fraser Valley Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Private Practice, Eagle Ridge Hospital Sub-Acute Unit, and Neuromotion Physiotherapy Private Practice.

Sanjin is certified as an Astym® practitioner. Astym is a new, revolutionary rehabilitation process that helps soft tissue problems by getting rid of scar tissue from old injuries in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It is backed by scientific research and used in professional sports including NHL, NFL, and the NCAA. Learn more about Astym treatment.

WHAT IS ASTYM TREATMENT?

Astym treatment is a physical therapy treatment that regenerates healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons, etc.), and eliminates or reduces unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions.

Astym treatment is highly effective for restoring movement and reducing pain from soft tissue injury/dysfunction, and Astym even works when other approaches routinely fail.  One of the main reasons for this is that Astym was designed to target the underlying cause of many soft tissue problems, rather than just trying to relieve symptoms. Here are some of the diagnoses where patients have demonstrated excellent clinical results when treated with Astym:

  • Lateral epicondylosis, chronic lateral epicondylitis
    • Carpal tunnel syndrome
    • DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis
    • Wrist sprain
    • Plantar fasciopathy/heel pain/chronic plantar fasciitis
    • Achilles tendinosis and chronic Achilles tendinitis
    • Shin splints
    • Patellar tendinosis, chronic patellar tendinitis/tendonitis (jumper’s knee)
    • IT band syndrome
    • Chronic hamstring strain
    • Joint contractures
    • Overuse injuries
    • Pain or loss of motion & function following surgery, trauma, or overuse injury

Here is a full listing of diagnoses that have been monitored and the outcomes (treatment results) tracked.

Astym treatment is non-invasive, which means there are no injections or incisions. Instruments are applied topically (on top of the skin) to locate dysfunctional (unhealthy) tissue, and to transfer mild to moderate pressure to the underlying soft tissue structures. Astym treatment stimulates tissue turnover, scar tissue resorption, and the regeneration of tendons, muscles, and other soft tissue structures.

Astym treatment is typically provided twice weekly for four to five weeks (about 9 total treatment sessions) and is done in conjunction with eccentric loading, stretching, and functional exercises. Unlike other treatments, Astym encourages patients to be active, workers to stay on the job, and athletes to stay in their sport during treatment. The Astym process actually makes the tissues of the body stronger and allows a patient’s body to become adapted to greater stress without injury. Patients are very satisfied and enthused with the results they see from Astym.

Astym is used in settings ranging from therapy clinics to hospitals to industrial rehabilitation to elite/professional athletics. This highly-effective, proven treatment helps countless patients every day. Astym is scientifically based and supported by clinical research and extensive outcomes

Sanjin aslo uses taping in his treatments. Lots of tape is on the market but we use a leukotape and cover roll with some patients to help with healing by making you more aware of your movements with the tape creating a proprioceptive education for your brian to affect how your body uses different areas for movement. It can also help with stabilization of an area, and even fluid drainage.

The tape is commonly used by physiotherapists to:

  • relieve your pain.
  • improve joint stability.
  • enhance athlete confidence.
  • reduce injury recurrence.
  • prevent injury.
  • reduce strain on injured or vulnerable tissues.
  • correct faulty biomechanics.
  • inhibit muscle action.
  • helps your brain reconnect with your body’s movement patterns

A special tape is applied by the physiotherapist to sometimes help the brain reconnect with the area of dysfunction. Sanjin does use taping as a technique for many of his patients.

Kinesiology tape has many benefits, including:

  • Providing support to sore muscles.
  • Stabilizing injuries as they heal.
  • Prolonging the effects of physical therapy
  • Providing relief for swelling

Sanjin uses needles for dry needling areas to decrease muscle tightness, this works a bit differently than IMS also used by some physiotherapists, but Sanjin prefers dry needling for his patients.

Acupuncture vs Dry Needling, what should I do?

If you’re simply looking to relieve muscle pain and tightness, dry needling is a promising option. But if you’re seeking treatment for a certain medical condition, acupuncture is the way to go. You may either feel relaxed or energized after undergoing any of the two procedures.

Acupuncturists insert very thin needles into specific points on the body based on their knowledge from TCM to stimulate energy flow within the body, whereas dry needlers use thicker needles that target trigger points within muscles to relieve tension and decrease pain.

The difference between dry needling and acupuncture goes further than that they both use needles. Dry needle treatment, also known as myofascial point dry needling, is a remarkable and completely natural treatment for chronic and acute pain. Often used as part of a larger treatment plan, it is widely misunderstood by many patients who have questions about dry needling and liken the procedure to acupuncture. The differences between dry needling and acupuncture actually outweigh the similarities by far.

DRY NEEDLE THERAPY VS ACUPUNCTURE

Both dry needling and acupuncture involve the insertion of thin needles into certain parts of the body, but the similarities stop there. Dry needling acupuncture difference is that during an acupuncture session, needles are inserted into points along meridian lines. These lines represent the body’s organs, and they are based on ancient Chinese medicine. Acupuncture is based on the idea of balance and restoring the proper flow of energy, also known as Qi pronounced Chee, throughout the body.

During acupuncture, the needles are usually left in place for 15 to 30 minutes. It is most often used to treat internal ailments, including digestive problems, insomnia, stress, and chronic pain.

Dry needle treatment is a relatively new treatment based on modern Western medicine. This treatment was developed in the 1980s, and during treatment, needles are inserted into trigger points, or tender bands of muscle located within larger muscles.

When needles are inserted into trigger points, they elicit a response that releases the trigger point and restores normal function. The difference between dry needling and acupuncture is that dry needling is used to treat cases of chronic and acute pain without the use of medication, surgical procedures, etc.

One of the great things about Momentum Therapeutics is we do have a Kinesiologist in house to help with a guided one on one rehabilitation session that works in conjunction with what Sanjin is working on to get you back to pain free activities of daily living sooner than just with passive care.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture stimulates the balance and flow of Qi (pronounced chee) energy that in Traditional Chinese Medicine is considered essential to health. When the body is healthy, Qi flows smoothly through the meridians that make up a conceptual network of pathways throughout the entire body. Sometimes these channels can become blocked due to strong emotions, poor diet, stress, heredity, or trauma. Through acupuncture, Port Moody and Coquitlam patients can open meridians and achieve the energy flow they need for optimal balance and health.

The body’s 12 main meridians surface to skin level 12 times throughout the body, allowing us to “reach” the channels with acupuncture needles. Each meridian corresponds to a certain internal organ. Stimulation of acupuncture points has been shown to trigger physiological reactions including the release of pain-relieving endorphins, lowering of blood pressure, increase of the immune system, and more. Acupuncture’s biggest benefit, however, is increasing the body’s natural ability to heal.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

If new to the idea of acupuncture, Port Moody and Coquitlam residents may have a few questions. First and foremost – does it hurt? Believe it or not, acupuncture is not painful. The sterile needles we use at Momentum Therapeutics may have long handles, but the actual needle is too tiny to cause much pain because we insert them only millimeters (or less) into your skin, depending on your condition, constitution, and size.

Dry needling use thicker needles that target trigger points within muscles to relieve tension and decrease pain which works with western medicine and muscular anatomy while Acupuncture works with Qi , meridian lines of the body and Yin and Yang balance.

Patient:- “When I gave acupuncture a try, I was mainly curious about the process. Surprisingly, during the treatment, it was the first time I experienced deep relaxation, free from my usual racing thoughts. I felt this incredible energy flowing through my body, which was an amazing experience. Now, I’m completely hooked on it.”

Unlike the conventional approach of frequent visits, the clinic’s goal is to guide patients towards lasting relief, resulting in fewer return visits.

Various techniques are employed at Momentum Therapeutics, including Myofascial and manual release, Diversified adjustments, Vestibular and concussion rehab, facial abrasion therapy, Applied kinesiology, and Exercise programs. Headaches, often originating from neck muscles and joints, can be effectively treated through chiropractic methods. Whether caused by whiplash or postural issues, chiropractic care offers valuable solutions.

By combining diagnostic expertise with advanced tools and hands-on techniques, the clinic aims to empower patients to live active and pain-free lives.
